Trucks and Safety

Re “Truck Crashes and Explodes, Igniting Office,” March 22.
I was not surprised by the serious truck accident on the Ventura Freeway.
As a driver who travels the corridor from the Conejo Grade through Oxnard quite frequently, I think it is apparent that the Highway Patrol has disappeared from view when it comes to big rig speeding.
If I understand the law correctly, tractor-trailers and any vehicles towing trailers are supposed to drive at no more than 55 mph in California. If you drive that Ventura Freeway corridor on any given day, you will rarely see a big rig doing less than 65 mph and many times over 70 mph. Cars with trailers also drive that stretch with impunity at well over 55.
Not many years ago, the Highway Patrol was an effective force dealing with large trucks and car trailer speeding problems. What has changed?
