PEPPERDINE SCOUTING REPORT

PEPPERDINE * About Pepperdine: The Waves have not had a serious injury all season and all seven players who average at least 19 minutes are at full strength. They will be needed. Pepperdine wants to wear down Indiana, which blew leads in several recent games. David Lalazarian and Craig Lewis could give Pepperdine an edge off the bench because Indiana lacks depth. Brandon Armstrong, the Waves’ leading scorer at 14.1 points a game, slumped during the West Coast Conference tournament. The Waves force nearly 19 turnovers a game and shut down nearly every high-scoring guard they faced. In the only meeting between the teams, Pepperdine defeated Indiana, 57-56, in 1978.
INDIANA
* About Indiana: The Hoosiers, who led the Big Ten in scoring, assists, field-goal percentage and three-point percentage, will not be easily rattled by Pepperdine’s matchup zone and variety of presses. The offense centers on the play of senior guards Michael Lewis and A.J. Guyton. Lewis broke Quinn Buckner’s school assist record and Guyton, an Associated Press All-American, averages 20.3 points. Center Kirk Haston, who averages 15.3 points, might be poised for a big game because Pepperdine has trouble containing agile big men.
INDIANA LOG
* Keys to the game: Pepperdine must improve its shooting and convert turnovers into points. The Waves shot only 39.8% in the WCC tournament after making 46% during the regular season. Pepperdine, which has held nearly every opposing guard to under his scoring average, plans to tire Guyton by forcing him to bring the ball upcourt. If the game is close down the stretch, the Waves need somebody to step up and make a shot. Only Tezale Archie has been inclined to do so on a regular basis.
