Law Officers Grew by 11% in 2 Years

The number of federal law enforcement officers grew by 11% from 1996 to 1998, the Justice Department said. About half the growth of about 8,000 men and women was in the Immigration and Naturalization Service. Within that agency, the number of Border Patrol officers alone rose from 5,441 in 1996 to 7,714 in 1998, an increase of 42%. Overall, federal agencies employed about 83,000 full-time law enforcement officers with arrest powers and firearms authorization, according to the Justice Department Bureau of Justice Statistics.
