The city Planning Commission has ordered First Southern Baptist Church to clean up the construction site for a homeless shelter on church property.
The city has deemed the area a safety hazard and ordered Pastor Wiley Drake to address a list of problems identified at the site.
They include removing an illegal structure on the property, storing items inside buildings and not leaving them outside, and removing vehicles in a variety of stages of disrepair from the site. Exposed rebar on a block wall must also be removed within two weeks, along with illegal lighting, and the wall must be capped.
Church officials say construction is proceeding slowly because of a shortage of cash and donated labor.
