A woman has pleaded not guilty to charges she tried to drown her two children in Channel Island Harbor.

Narinder Virk, 39, entered her plea during a brief appearance in a Ventura County courtroom before Judge William Brodie.

Brodie set a trial date of June 20 for the immigrant Indian woman.

Virk faces two counts of attempted murder for allegedly holding the children, ages 6 and 9, under water on Jan. 12.

Authorities believe she was trying to kill her children, then planned to kill herself.

Supporters contend Virk, who speaks no English, was suffering from depression because of marital problems at the time.

Virk, they argue, suffered from years of mistreatment and battery from her spouse.

Virk, a Port Hueneme resident, is being held at the main jail in Ventura in lieu of $500,000 bail.
