Retreat to Focus on Teen Violence

The Hispanic-Jewish Women’s Task Force will discuss solutions to teen violence and ways to promote cultural awareness during an all-day retreat Friday at Cal State Northridge.

A youth panel will be moderated by Sister Carmel of the Valley Family Center while Assemblyman Antonio Villaraigosa will address gang violence concerns. Also, representatives from the Guadalupe Center, Valley Trauma Center, Haven Hills Shelter and El Proyecto will present information on various programs available to area residents.

The annual retreat is sponsored by the Jewish Valley Alliance, which serves the San Fernando, Conejo, Simi, Santa Clarita and Antelope valleys. With more than 60 members, the Hispanic-Jewish Women’s Task Force was created three years ago to break down cultural barriers and provide outreach programs, officials said.

“The task force is a group of concerned, committed women who not only want to learn about each other’s cultures, but also want to make a positive difference in the community,” said Saundra Mandel, director of the Jewish Community Relations Committee of the Jewish Valley Alliance.

The retreat will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the University Club Room at Cal State Northridge. For more information, call (818) 464-3203.
