Israeli President Hands In Resignation

JERUSALEM — Israeli President Ezer Weizman handed in his resignation Monday, in effect ending a seven-year term that turned sour when he was found to have acted improperly by accepting gifts while in office.
Lawmakers will elect a new president July 31, voting between former Prime Minister Shimon Peres and legislator Moshe Katsav of the opposition Likud Party.
Weizman admitted to receiving $350,000 but insisted the money never affected his decision-making.
Weizman, 76, had said previously that he would resign sometime this year, citing ill health and the police investigation.
