Panel to Hear Plan on Detecting Plumes

New technology for detecting plumes of the gasoline additive MTBE will be presented to the Restoration Advisory Board of the Naval Construction Battalion Center at a public meeting.

The board is part of the Navy’s environmental cleanup plan for the base in Port Hueneme and Point Mugu Naval Air Station. MTBE, which was intended to help clean the air but instead polluted ground water wells all over the country, was discovered leaking from the naval center’s gas station in 1995.

It has since grown into a plume nearly one mile long and 500 feet wide--one of the largest of its kind in the state. Portions of the plume are being used as a national test site for technologies that detect MTBE and find ways to remove it.

The cleanup program will determine whether industrial operations at the Navy installations threaten human health or the environment, and if so, will work to ensure appropriate cleanup.

The meeting is set for 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Orvene Carpenter Community Center, 550 Park Ave., Port Hueneme.
