U.S. and Cuba

* I would like to suggest Juan Miguel Gonzalez, the father of Elian, as the next man of the year. This man was offered all types of financial and political incentives and rewards to come to the U.S. and, in effect, renounce his country and political beliefs.
I admire him greatly for loving his son and for standing by his principles in spite of all the material incentives offered to him.
I wonder if there is a politician in all of Washington who compares to this man regarding integrity and principles.

With all the hoopla over Elian Gonzalez turning into a sideshow by Fidel Castro over our embargo of his nation, a question persists in my mind. If Cuba is such a great place, why do so many people want to leave and why won’t Castro let them?
People should not be forced to leave their country on an inner tube to enjoy basic freedoms.
Hey, Fidel, put it to a vote!
