Santa Margarita Stuns Irvine
Santa Margarita shut down Irvine’s forward tandem of Jodi Carlson and Kristin Thawley and knocked off the No. 9 Vaqueros, 49-32, in a nonleague girls’ basketball game Saturday at Irvine.
Carlson and Thawley combined for only 13 points and Santa Margarita took a 25-11 halftime lead on their way to an easy victory. Vanessa Ferragamo scored 16 points and Colleen O’Leary added 12 for the Eagles.
Irvine (15-3) lost despite making 13 of 14 free-throw attempts.
In other nonleague games:
Century 63, Saddleback 39--Century forward Charlenda Van Buren scored 22 points and had 18 rebounds in the nonleague game. The Centurions (13-4) went on a 28-4 run in the first half to take a 40-14 halftime lead.
Huntington Beach 56, Sonora 46--Amy Sanders scored 26 points and Christine Kimoto had 11 points and nine assists to lead host Huntington Beach (9-5).
Brandi Davis scored 11 points for Sonora (9-5).
Corona del Mar 72, Ocean View 13--Kristen McCoy scored 15 points and Andrea Gruber had 12 points and five steals to lead host Corona del Mar (12-4).
Marina 44, Mission Viejo 34--Miranda Emde and Nikki Lee scored 17 points each to lead visiting Marina (12-5).
Rosary 74, Los Angeles Immaculate Heart 33--Maggie Barnett had 20 points and five steals for Rosary (14-4), which led, 36-13, at the half.
No. 2 Troy 60, Westminster 36--Veronica Johns-Richardson had 20 points and six steals for Troy. The Warriors (13-3) also got 13 points and 10 rebounds from Kianey Givens-Davis and 10 points and 12 rebounds from Amanda Livingston. Westminster (11-4) was led by Diana Hernandez, who scored 15 points.
In the Express League:
Norwalk Pioneer Baptist 43, Heritage Christian 32--Heritage Christian lost the game despite getting 21 points from Cyndi Liskey and 13 rebounds and five steals from Luz Heridia.
In Express League boys’ basketball:
Heritage Christian 65, Norwalk Pioneer Baptist 59--Matt Winter scored 23 points and Matt Williams had 15 rebounds and seven blocks for Heritage Christian (12-4, 3-0).
In boys’ nonleague games:
Costa Mesa 85, Western 69--Forward Nate Jones scored 31 points, including 24 in the first half, and Steve Whittaker added 20 for Costa Mesa (15-4). Robert Turner led Western with 29 points.
No. 2 Ocean View 77, University 68--Swingman Marques Crane hit a three-pointer with 1 minute 45 seconds left after University had closed to within 66-65, and forward Jeremiah Bell made all six of his free throws in the last minute for Ocean View (16-2). University was led by Andy Lawrence’s 17 points.
