Workshops to Focus on Parenting Teens
The Ventura Unified School District has scheduled a free series of workshops titled “A Time for Parents,” designed for the parents of preteens and teenagers. It runs on five consecutive Thursdays from March 2-30.
The workshops will focus on improving family communication, building self-esteem, developing effective discipline, dealing with peer pressure and identifying substance abuse problems. The class is facilitated by Dr. Margaret Barker, a psychologist who has taught the district-sponsored workshops for 14 years.
“As the instructor, part of what I enjoy is the enthusiasm of the parents who attend,” Barker said. “It’s clear that they care about their kids. One of the things I’ve learned is that the parents are the most important people in their kids’ lives.”
According to Barker, the workshop consists of a presentation and skill-building exercises that focus on tempering discipline by communicating love and caring. “I’ve learned to choose my battles more selectively,” one parent said after the workshop. “This has made my discipline more effective.”
The workshop will take place at 6:45 p.m. in the Ron Halt Community Room in the Technology Development Center at Ventura Adult & Continuing Education, 5200 Valentine Road. For more information or to register, call 641-5200.
