Brummett Struggles After Promotion

Pitcher Sean Brummett may have jumped too far too fast.

After going 7-4 with a 1.00 earned-run average for Class-A Cedar Rapids, he was promoted to double-A Erie, skipping Lake Elsinore, the Angels’ top Class-A team.

Brummett, a 15th-round pick out of Indiana State in 1997, is 0-5 with a 5.35 ERA in six starts with Erie.

Injuries limited Brummett to 13 games in three seasons in the Angel organization. He was 1-0 with a 1.69 ERA and three saves in nine relief appearances for Class-A Boise last season.

The left-handed Brummett started this season in the bullpen. He had five saves in 27 relief appearances with Cedar Rapids, then was moved into the rotation, where he went 3-2 with a 0.50 ERA in five starts.

Meanwhile, closer Charles Thames threw one shutout inning in his debut with Lake Elsinore. Thames, a fourth-round pick out of Texas in June, was 1-1 with a 0.35 ERA with Boise. Angel officials project Thames as a set-up reliever.

Pitcher Philip Wilson, a third-round pick in 1999, is 2-0 in three starts with Lake Elsinore. He has given up four runs in 22 innings.
