5th Man Pleads Guilty in Armored Truck Robbery

VAN NUYS — A fifth man pleaded guilty Tuesday to robbery in connection with an armored truck holdup last year in Van Nuys in which the driver helped steal more than $1 million from the vehicle.
Luis Perez, 31, of Pacoima, could receive as much as eight years in prison when he is sentenced Sept. 6 by Van Nuys Superior Court Judge Michael Hoff.
Armored truck driver David Campbell, 37, of South-Central Los Angeles, pleaded guilty earlier to kidnapping and robbery, and was sentenced to seven years and eight months in state prison.
Campbell previously had been honored by the district attorney’s office and the local Rotary Club as a courageous citizen for driving LAPD officers to rescue wounded civilians and officers from a Bank of America parking lot during the North Hollywood shootout on Feb. 28, 1997.
Also sentenced to prison for their roles in the armored truck robbery were Christopher Baca, 31, of Panorama City; Raul Briceno, 25, of North Hollywood; and Jose Fernandez, 25, of North Hollywood. Each pleaded guilty to kidnapping and robbery.
On Thursday, Christopher O’Connor, 25, of Palmdale, is expected to plead guilty to robbery.
