Rescue efforts ended with four sailors dead and one missing after a cargo ship sank in the North Atlantic. Ten of the 15 sailors who fled the sinking ship off Newfoundland were rescued. One frigid sailor clinging to his dead shipmate was plucked from the water as rescuers searched for survivors of the Vanessa, a Norwegian-owned 4,400-ton bulk carrier registered in the Bahamas. The ship had been carrying chemical fertilizer to the Caribbean from Sweden. Dan Bedell of Canada’s Rescue Coordination Center in Halifax said 10 of the sailors were Filipinos, four were Burmese and one was Dutch. The dead included two Burmese and one Filipino. The missing man was Filipino.
