City Seeks Advisor on Campaign Law

The City Council tonight will review the qualifications of six attorneys to advise them on issues relating to the city’s campaign reform law.
The council is interested in hiring an independent attorney to give them an opinion on the constitutionality of the campaign law, in effect since 1993, which limits individual contributions to $1,000.
The law has come under scrutiny since a misdemeanor complaint was filed in July by the city attorney’s office against a Lake Forest political group, alleging violations during last November’s election. Fund-raising activities of Mayor Tom Daly and former Councilman Irv Pickler during the election also have been questioned by some, including Councilman Bob Zemel. But City Atty. Jack L. White said in an opinion that allegations of campaign-law violations against Daly and Pickler were unfounded.
