* A $55.5-million federal grant toward the purchase of Burbank Airport from owner Lockheed Corp. is announced by Transportation Secretary Brock Adams. Lockheed had threatened to close the airport by New Year’s Day if it was not purchased by a public agency.
* “Julia,” starring Jane Fonda and Vanessa Redgrave, premieres at the Avco Center Cinema in Westwood.
* Representatives from Mayor Bradley’s office, meeting in Monte Carlo with international sports officials, make it known Los Angeles will not build expensive new facilities as a condition for hosting the 1984 Olympic Games. “The whole idea of getting the Olympics by promising everything makes no sense,” says Anton Calleia, leader of the Bradley contingent.
