La Canada Goes the Distance and Outlasts L.A. Baptist

It took two hours 45 minutes for La Canada High to defeat L.A. Baptist, 11-15, 14-16, 15-8, 16-14, 16-14, in a nonleague girls’ volleyball match Thursday night at La Canada.
Emily Dalbeck had 20 kills and Stephanie Tenerelli added 18 for the Spartans (5-1), the fourth-ranked team in Southern Section Division IV-A.
“It was crazy,” said La Canada Coach Tami Aldrich, who battled heat and hunger. “I got so light-headed and dizzy, I had to eat a peanut butter sandwich between the third and fourth games. I was ready to pass out.”
Kristen Jensen had 27 kills and Gloria Erickson added 20 for L.A. Baptist (5-1), but La Canada’s defense spurred the comeback against the Knights, the second-ranked team in Division IV-A.
GIRLS’ TENNIS
San Fernando 7, Poly 0--The No. 1 doubles team of Lidia Cordero and Violeta Arteaga won their ninth consecutive set over two seasons for the Tigers (3-1) in a nonconference match at San Fernando.
Dos Pueblos 11, Rio Mesa 7--Bridget Ragan and Jill Brunner each won two sets for the Spartans (2-4, 0-2) in a Channel League match at Rio Mesa.
Chaminade 11, Louisville 7--Teresa Galindo and Kinsley Carnahan each won three sets for the Eagles (3-1, 3-0) at the Northridge Tennis and Swim Club.
Hart 12, Burbank 6--Juniors Kristen Semelsberger and Meredith Simmons swept at No. 2 doubles, 6-1, 6-1, 7-5, for the Indians (7-0, 2-0) in a Foothill League match at Hart.
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Portland State d. Cal State Northridge, 15-12, 15-6, 11-15, 13-15, 17-15--Nancy Ma missed her first match because of a season-ending injury and the Matadors dropped a Big Sky Conference match at Northridge.
Holli Sierra had 21 kills for the Matadors (9-5, 3-2).
GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL
Highland d. Notre Dame, 15-1, 15-7, 15-6--Josie Wilson had seven kills for the Bulldogs (6-0), who are off to their best start in the program’s seven-year history.
BOYS’ WATER POLO
Royal 13, Malibu 6--Garrett Herzer had 13 saves in the San Luis Obispo tournament.
BOYS’ CROSS-COUNTRY
Pacific League Meet No. 1--Isabel Casillas ran away with a three-mile race at Verdugo Park for Hoover (5-0, 5-0), with four of his teammates scoring in the top 10.
GIRLS’ CROSS-COUNTRY
Pacific League Meet No. 1--Melissa Shing finished first in 19:30 for Crescenta Valley (5-0, 5-0) in a three-mile race at Verdugo Park.
