James Clifford’s three-run home run in the top of the ninth tied the Lancaster JetHawks’ game against the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes at the Epicenter, but the Quakes won, 5-4, on Robbie Kent’s homer in the bottom of the inning.
As the JetHawks, who finished the first half 33-37, headed into the California League all-star break, several roster moves were announced.
Catcher Dusty Wathan and outfielder Miguel Correa were promoted to double-A Memphis, Tenn; right-hander Chris Beck, a former standout at The Master’s College, was released; and right-hander Kevin Gryboski was activated from the disabled list.
The only incoming player announced was right-hander Joe Mays, who will be promoted from Class-A Wisconsin. The JetHawks are also expected to pick up a catcher and an outfielder, to be determined before the second half begins Thursday.
Wathan, 23, is having his best season since he signed in 1994, hitting .297 and throwing out nearly 50% of would-be base stealers. Correa, 25, an eighth-year pro who started the season at double A, hit .329 with 15 homers and 47 runs batted in.
Beck, 25, was 1-4 with an earned-run average of 9.00.
Mays, 21, was 8-3 with a 2.29 ERA at Wisconsin, earning a spot on the Midwest League All-Star team.
