Downey, Menon Reach Finals in Guild Event

Tim Downey of Laguna Niguel and Sashi Menon of Dana Point teamed to advance to the finals of the senior men’s 35 and over doubles competition in the 36th annual Adoption Guild Charity Tennis Tournament Saturday at the Newport Beach Tennis Club.

Downey and Menon defeated Ross Case and Phil Dent of Newport Beach, 6-3, 7-5, in the semifinals and will face Eric Quade and Kevin Armstrong from Irvine in the finals at 12:30 p.m. today. Quade and Armstrong advanced to the finals with a 7-5, 6-4 win over Laguna Beach’s Chris Dunk and Eric Van’t Hof.

Moira Gandy and Quade of Irvine will face Eliie Compton and Bill Dunkle of San Clemente in the mixed 6.0 championship at 3:30 p.m. today.

Newport Beach was well represented in the 3.5 division. All participants in the mixed and women’s championships are from Newport Beach. In the mixed championship, Wendy Macy and Kevin Sheridan will face Gwyn MacLeod and John Bennington at 2 p.m. In the women’s 3.5 championship, Suzanne Madigan and Wendy Macy will team to take on Barbara Kraus and Bonnie Varker at 11 a.m.
