Smiley’s Big Inning Keys Victory for Vigilantes

Ruben Smiley had two hits, a run, a stolen base and a run batted in--all in the second inning--as the Vigilantes scored six runs in the second inning of an 8-5 victory over the Chico Heat in a Western Baseball League game Saturday night at Nettleton Stadium on the campus of Cal State Chico.

Cory Parker, a Foothill High graduate, had a home run and two RBIs and Carl Nichols had a hit, scored two runs and drove in three runs for the Vigilantes as they improved to 6-3 and remained in first place in the Southern Division.

Parker, Nichols and Sam Taylor, the Nos. 2-3-4 batters in the Vigilantes’ lineup, had five hits and eight RBIs combined.

Matt Davis, Chris Butterfield and Brian Arntzen were the home run hitters for the Heat, which dropped to 3-6 and is in fourth place in the Southern Division.

Kirt Kashita came in for the Vigilantes in the bottom of the eighth. He gave up no runs and no hits to preserve the victory.

The teams will meet at 5:05 p.m. today at Nettleton Stadium to finish the three-game series.
