Borussia Pulls Upset in Champions Cup

MUNICH, Germany —  In one of the biggest upsets of the European soccer season, Borussia Dortmund defeated defending champion Juventus of Turin, 3-1, on Wednesday in the final of the European Champions Cup.

Borussia, the first German team to win the title since Hamburg SV in 1983, captured its first international trophy and it came in Europe’s most prestigious soccer competition for clubs.

Karlheinz Riedle, one of the many Borussia players with Italian League experience, scored two first-half goals within five minutes. Lars Ricken, a substitute, added a third in the 70th minute at Olympic Stadium.

Alessandro Del Piero scored in the 55th minute for Juventus.

Juventus was bidding for a rare soccer Grand Slam following a season in which it won its record 24th Italian League title, the world club championship and the European SuperCup. It was trying to become the first team to win consecutive Champions Cups since AC Milan in 1989 and 1990.

Ajax Amsterdam is the only European team to have won four major titles, in 1972-73.
