Winning Essay Is 8th-Graders’ Travel Ticket

“Without peace, the world is at war fighting for things like gold, land, conquest and domination of others; all of which mean nothing you when leave this world.”
The words of Gandhi? No. Martin Luther King Jr.? Nope. These are the thoughts of three 8th-grade students from Bret Harte Middle School in South-Central Los Angeles, who won trips to San Francisco and EuroDisney in France for their essay about an ideal school.
Jamar Andrews, 14, Juan Galvez, 13, and Lami Glenn, 14, who will leave for San Francisco on Saturday, collaborated on one of six winners from 7,000 North American entries--and the only California winner.
“I’m proud that finally somebody from South-Central would win something,” Galvez said Wednesday. “Plus, I get to see if Mickey Mouse speaks French, too.”
The contest was sponsored by Disney Magazine Publishing and the Just Think Foundation, a Sausalito-based nonprofit organization.
