Harriman Auction Surprises Sotheby’s
From Times Staff and Wire Reports
When the possessions of the late Pamela Harriman went on the block at Sotheby’s--the first of three days--prices were uneven. Despite some bids that exceeded expectations, other objects fetched disappointing prices. “The Stone Breakers,” a Georges Seurat oil that Harriman hung in the ambassador’s residence in Paris, drew only $552,500 from an anonymous American dealer, less than the $600,000-to-$800,000 estimate. The total of $4.7 million for the first session easily exceeded Sotheby’s presale estimate of $2.6 million to $3.6 million.
