Man Charged in Fatal Hit-and-Run Accident

Rafael Claro-Miranda, 35, of Glendale, was charged Monday with one count of vehicular manslaughter and two counts of leaving the scene of an accident in connection with a hit-and-run accident that killed a mother of six and injured a man in Burbank last week, said a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles County district attorney.

All three charges are felonies. Claro-Miranda, who is being held on $250,000 bail, is scheduled to be arraigned June 3.

Sharon Marie McPherson, 43, died late Wednesday after being struck while trying to put gas in her car near Burbank High School. Three of McPherson’s children were in the car when she was hit.

Agustin Luz Trejo, 28, who was helping McPherson, was also struck and is expected to be hospitalized for several months with injuries to his back and pelvis.

A witness gave police a description of the fleeing car, and a car matching that description was found in the Media City Center parking lot. Claro-Miranda was one of three men changing a tire on the car, prosecutors said.

Nicolas Alas, 27, of Burbank, who was arrested with Claro-Miranda, was not charged, prosecutors said. He has been released pending further investigation, Burbank police said.
