Bus Fares to Drop for Clean Commute Day

In the spirit of the American Lung Assn.’s Clean Commute Day, South Coast Area Transit will drop all fares to 25 cents Thursday to entice commuters to use public transportation and cut pollution-causing emissions.

The fares, reduced from $1 for adults, 75 cents for students and 50 cents for senior citizens and the disabled, are an incentive for residents who generally shun the clean-burning SCAT buses for cars.

According to SCAT, about 50% of the county’s air pollution can be attributed to vehicle exhaust. Organizers of the one-day event said that if commuters used public transit once a week, pollution levels could be cut by about 20%.

Most of the buses in SCAT’s system have been converted from diesel-burning engines to natural gas, which produces as much as 95% less harmful emission.

“The special fare is an incentive for people who are not regular bus passengers,” said Toni Young, a member of the SCAT board of directors.

SCAT will give free canvas tote bags to the first 3,500 passengers that day.
