Ex-Official in Salinas Case Held in Spain

A former special prosecutor wanted for questioning about accusations that he planted evidence implicating a former president’s brother in a high-level murder was detained in Madrid, Mexican authorities said. The Mexican attorney general’s office confirmed that Pablo Chapa Bezanilla was being held in the Spanish capital. News reports out of Madrid said Chapa was picked up in a joint operation of Mexican federal judicial police and the Spanish national police. Chapa has been subpoenaed in Mexico to answer accusations that he planted a skull and other human bones at the ranch of Raul Salinas de Gortari, brother of former President Carlos Salinas de Gortari, in an attempt to incriminate him in the murder of a missing Mexican senator.
