Expos Hold Off Giants, 8-7

From Associated Press

Rondell White’s two-run single broke an eighth inning tie Thursday night and lifted the Montreal Expos to an 8-7 victory over the San Francisco Giants.

The Giants had tied the game, 6-6, with a four-run seventh highlighted by Barry Bonds’ two-run double.

In the eighth, pinch-hitter F.P. Santangelo led off with a single against Julian Tavarez (0-1) and Mark Grudzielanek reached on an infield hit. Mike Lansing sacrificed before White singled to center, giving the Expos their fourth consecutive victory.

The Giants added a run in the ninth on Damon Berryhill’s run-scoring single off Lee Smith, but Ugueth Urbina came on with runners on first and second and got Bill Mueller on a grounder to first.

Trailing, 6-2, the Giants tied it in the seventh. Berryhill, Mueller and Darryl Hamilton hit consecutive singles off reliever Omar Daal. Berryhill scored on shortstop Grudzielanek’s throwing error on a grounder by Jose Vizcaino. Dave Veres came on for Daal and Glenallen Hill made it 6-4 with a run-scoring groundout. Bonds then hit a 3-0 pitch into the gap in right-center.

Dustin Hermanson, making his fifth major league start, gave up two runs and struck out eight in six innings.
