TONIGHT’S GAME
ANGELS’ SHIGETOSHI HASEGAWA (1-2, 6.33 ERA) vs. ORIOLES’ MIKE JOHNSON (0-0, 1.88 ERA)
* UPDATE--Baltimore has the best record in the American League and it’s easy to see why. The Oriole pitching staff leads the league in earned-run average, shutouts, saves and is second in strikeouts. The Angels catch a break--they don’t have to face Jimmy Key, Scott Erickson or Mike Mussina--but Johnson has given up only three runs in 14 1/3 innings this season and opponents are batting only .214 against Thursday night’s pitcher, Scott Kamieniecki. Johnson, who never pitched above the Class-A level until this season, is making his first major league start. Hasegawa, who will be making his fourth start, gave up four earned runs and seven hits in six innings in his last start, a 5-4 loss to the Brewers on Friday in Milwaukee. “He’s gotten better every time out,” catcher Jim Leyritz said.
* Thursday, 7 p.m.--Jason Dickson (5-1, 3.27) vs. Scott Kamieniecki (2-1, 3.35).
