Caminiti Goes on Disabled List

SAN DIEGO — The San Diego Padres placed third baseman Ken Caminiti on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right hamstring, sidelining the 1996 National League Most Valuable Player.
The 34-year-old Caminiti was batting .241 with four home runs and 18 runs batted in during 32 games this season. He originally injured the hamstring on April 20, when the Padres played the St. Louis Cardinals in Honolulu, and missed two games.
He’ll be eligible to return to San Diego’s active roster on May 27. The Padres are in last place in the National League West Division with a 14-20 record, seven games behind the division-leading San Francisco Giants and Colorado Rockies.
Caminiti batted .326 with 40 homers and 130 RBI in 146 games last season.
First baseman Wally Joyner and infielder Craig Shipley were activated from the disabled list to replace Caminiti and first baseman Derek Lee, who was optioned to Triple-A Las Vegas yesterday.
