Woodbridge’s League Title Streak at 16

Breanna Bohls and Erica Greenberg weren’t even born when Woodbridge won its first league softball title, but as sure as Bohls and Greenberg grew up to become freshman reserves for the third-ranked Warriors, Woodbridge hasn’t lost a league title since.

The Warriors’ 16th consecutive league title was won outright with a 2-0 Sea View League victory over visiting Irvine Tuesday.

“They weren’t in the league when we had Jennifer Brundage [from 1988-91],” Irvine Coach Lisa Baker said. “It might be a different story. But they’re a solid club and they deserve respect.”

Woodbridge also won Pacific Coast and South Coast league titles.

The Warriors have won 23 in a row. They are 28-2, 9-0 in league with one game remaining.

Third-place Irvine, ranked sixth in Orange County, is 17-9, 6-3. The Vaqueros play host to second-place El Toro (22-6-1, 7-2) on Thursday. Fifth-ranked El Toro beat Santa Margarita, 2-1, on Nicki Everett’s two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Woodbridge won with solid defense and pitching, timely hitting and no mental mistakes. Woodbridge had only four hits against losing pitcher Colleen Young (12-5), but two--by Natasha Watley and Lisa Watanabe--came after Tracy Alcaraz was hit by a pitch. Ashley Boone’s sacrifice fly scored Alcaraz for a 1-0 lead.

Three Irvine errors in the next inning--facing Woodbridge’s 7-8-9 hitters--led to the second run.
