A joint effort by officials in Oxnard and Port Hueneme to reduce alcohol-related crashes resulted in a 12% drop in such accidents between Oct. 1 and March 31, according to the Oxnard Police Department.
The project, funded by the California Office of Traffic Safety, used 48 sobriety checkpoints in the two cities. To assure lasting results, the two cities also launched driving-under-the-influence prevention efforts focused on community education, police officials said.
Anyone wishing to learn what they can do to prevent DUI accidents can attend a meeting Thursday of the Oxnard-Port Hueneme Community Action Coalition to Prevent DUI. The meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. in the Carriage Square Community Storefront, 181 W. Gonzales Road, Oxnard. To reach the coalition, call 385-7490.
