Chatsworth Can’t Dance on El Camino Real, 12-11

El Camino Real High blew a five-run lead in the top of the seventh inning, then rallied in the bottom half when Joe Merchan singled home Joel Morales to give the Conquistadores a 12-11 victory over Chatsworth on Thursday in a Northwest Valley Conference baseball game at El Camino Real.

The Chancellors could have clinched the West Valley League title with a victory.

Merchan had four hits and the Conquistadores (14-9, 9-6) got home runs from Morales, Jared Maiden and Kurt Birkins.

David Sark had a grand slam in the third inning for Chatsworth (16-8, 11-4).

Kennedy 16, Granada Hills 3--David Lusk had four hits and four runs batted in for the Golden Cougars (19-9, 11-4) in a Northwest Valley Conference game at Kennedy.

Birmingham 5, Taft 4--Joey Rubin’s two-run single tied the game and Billy McGrath’s sacrifice fly drove in the go-ahead run for the Braves (16-13, 8-7) in the seventh inning of a Northwest Valley Conference game at Taft (14-11, 7-8).

Franklin 8, Verdugo Hills 7--The Dons (11-4, 10-4) scored four runs in the seventh on two doubles and a two-run home run by Jimmy Stevenson but fell short, leaving the Panthers in first place by one game in the Northern Conference.

Nick LoSardo had three doubles and Ethan Slimak hit a three-run home run for Verdugo Hills, which slipped to second place.

Sylmar 6, Grant 1--Chris Cervantes (4-1) scattered three hits in five innings while striking out four for the Spartans (15-9, 12-3) in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game at Sylmar.

Sylmar remained tied for first place with North Hollywood with two games left.

Canoga Park 8, Monroe 5--Kevin Carlsen pitched his seventh complete game of the season and hit a three-run triple for the Hunters (5-15, 4-11) in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game at Canoga Park.

Carlsen scattered nine hits, struck out seven and walked four.

Cleveland 6, San Fernando 1--Chris Vasquez went four for four and drove in two runs for the Cavaliers (14-10, 10-5) in a Northwest Valley Conference game at San Fernando (11-14, 2-13).

SOFTBALL

Agoura 1, Simi Valley 0--The Chargers scored in the seventh when Alicia White came home on an error on Kim Refkin’s ground ball in a Marmonte League game at Rancho Santa Susana Park.

Simi Valley (18-6, 7-5) fell to fourth place.

Jennifer Grennan (9-3-1) pitched a one-hitter for Agoura, striking out seven and walking one.

Thousand Oaks 4, Royal 0--Jennifer Sharron (16-3) pitched a two-hitter, striking out 12 and walking two for the Lancers (20-3, 10-2), ranked first in the region by The Times, in a Marmonte League game.

Camarillo 3, Newbury Park 2--The Scorpions (16-6, 10-2) scored three runs in the fifth inning of a Marmonte League game at Camarillo.

Camarillo remained tied for first place with Thousand Oaks.

Westlake 2, Channel Islands 0--Freshman Erin Voeltz (10-9-1) pitched a no-hitter with seven strikeouts and one walk for the Warriors (12-10-1, 7-4-1) in a Marmonte League game at Channel Islands (1-16, 0-12).

Michelle Notaro of Westlake extended her hitting streak to 14 games with two hits.

Saugus 9, Valencia 0--Nicole Giordano pitched a one-hitter, striking out eight, and had two hits, an RBI and two stolen bases for the Centurions (20-5, 8-0) in a Foothill League game at Saugus.

Arcadia 3, Hoover 0--Cori Herbert allowed three hits and struck out eight for the Tornadoes (16-8, 6-2) but lost a Pacific League game at Arcadia.

Hart 6, Canyon 4--Kortney Downen, who had three hits, scored on an error to put the Indians (20-7, 6-2) ahead for good in the fifth after the Cowboys (6-14, 2-6) tied the Foothill League game, 4-4, in the fourth.
