Climbing back: The Hueneme baseball team, chasing its first league title since 1981, lost two Channel League games at the end of April and fell to second place.
The Vikings were granted a reprieve last week when they used a victory and a loss by Rio Mesa to climb back into a first-place tie.
Hueneme Coach Reg Welker had a heart-to-heart talk with his players after a loss to third-place Dos Pueblos.
“It was our worst game of the season, we just folded up,” said Welker, whose team has three league games to play.
“We’ve put an awful lot of work in. In my heart, I think we deserve to win the league. I think [the players] realize we’ve got another chance but we’ll see how they respond.”
Tuesday, the Vikings regained sole possession of first place with a victory over Ventura and Rio Mesa’s loss to Buena.
