Tenants Tell Council of Fear Rents Will Rise

About 150 residents of the Continental Gardens Apartments came to City Hall on Tuesday night to voice concerns about the planned renovation of their building, to be funded by city-issued bonds.
Some residents fear they will be evicted from their homes or be unable to afford new rents.
“Some of us pay 40% to 50% and more of our salary for the rent,” resident Roberto Sanchez told council members.
The city will lend proceeds from a $14.3-million bond sale to Bertram Development Partners of Laguna Hills. The company officials previously pledged that all of the building’s 298 units will be priced for low-income renters.
