Long Beach State Sweeps UC Santa Barbara in Softball

Tammy Dietrich and Amy Miner matched one-hit shutouts to give Long Beach State a sweep of UC Santa Barbara, 8-0 and 1-0, in a Big West softball doubleheader Saturday at Long Beach.

In the second game, Nicole Walsh doubled in the game-winner in the bottom of the eighth for the 49ers (40-17-1), giving Miner her 16th victory.

Miner had a perfect game end on a one-out single in the top of the eighth.

In the opener, Dietrich became the fifth pitcher in Long Beach State history to win 20 games and the first since 1993 by shutting down UC Santa Barbara (24-35) in a game shortened by the eight-run mercy rule.

In another Big West Conference softball doubleheader:

Cal Poly San Luis Obispo 5-6, CS Fullerton 3-5--Alana Marquez had three hits and four RBIs to lead Cal Poly San Luis Obispo (36-15) to victory in the first game. In the second, Kelly Smith scattered 11 hits to get the win for the Mustangs. Julie Williams had two hits for Cal State Fullerton (29-25), which lost the second game despite scoring four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning.

At the Big West golf championships:

Long Beach State ties for fourth--Rhey Luna of Long Beach State shot a two-under-par 70 to finish the three-day event at even par 216 as the 49ers tied for fourth place with a score of 902. The 49ers tied with Utah State and finished well behind the champion, University of Pacific (291). UC Irvine finished sixth with a score of 904.

UCI’s top finisher was Alan Sue, who shot 222, good enough for a tie for ninth place. Long Beach State’s Terry Noe, who graduated from Sunny Hills High, also shot 222 and is in ninth place. Florian Bruhns from Pacific won the individual title with a score of 211.

At the Big West men’s tennis championships:

UC Santa Barbara 4, UC Irvine 0--UC Santa Barbara swept in singles and took two of three in doubles in the semifinals at Las Cruces, N.M.

Cameran Lindee and Rob Walker won in doubles, 8-6, for the Anteaters’ only win.

UC Santa Barbara plays Boise State for the championship and UC Irvine (12-9) plays New Mexico State today for third place.

In the Steve Scott Invitational track and field meet:

Scott, Gray and Wysocki win--UC Irvine alumnus Steve Scott, the American record-holder in the mile and a three-time Olympian, won the men’s 1,500 meters with a time of 3:49.89. Johnny Gray, the American record-holder in the men’s 800, won the event in 1:47.50, and Ruth Wysocki won the women’s 800 in 2:03.95.

Damon DeVault of Long Beach State won the shotput (55-2 1/4) and placed third in the discus (171-9).

Long Beach State’s Cory Johnson won the men’s high jump, clearing 6-8.

Long Beach State’s Asa Karlsson won the women’s 400 hurdles in 58.20, edging UC Irvine’s Skye Green by 22 hundredths of a second.

In the women’s 1,600 relay, Long Beach State held on to defeat UC Irvine with a time of 3:50.1. Green erased a 60-meter deficit on the anchor leg to bring the Anteaters within one-tenth of a second.
