Carl Richardson won three events and teammate Kris Phillips placed first in a pair in Rio Mesa High’s victory over Ventura and Santa Barbara in a Channel League boys’ track and field meet Tuesday.
Rio Mesa totaled 108 points to defeat Ventura (67) and Santa Barbara (12) and clinch its second consecutive league title.
Ventura (6-2, 6-1 in league meets) had won five consecutive championships from 1991-95.
“We pretty much did what I expected us to do,” Rio Mesa Coach Pete Weinerth said. “I really didn’t expect [Richardson] to beat [Ventura’s Matt Appel] in the 200, but other that that, we did what I expected.”
Richardson, a senior running track for the first time this season, won the 100 meters in 10.9 seconds, the 200 in 22.2 and 110 high hurdles in a school-record 14.6. He also ran a 50.6 leg on Rio Mesa’s 1,600 relay team that finished second behind Ventura with a season best of 3:26.4.
Phillips won the long at 22 feet 4 1/2 inches and the triple jump at 44-8 1/2.
Appel, defending Ventura County champion in the 400, won that event in 50.5, placed second in the 200 in 22.2 and ran legs on Ventura foursomes that won the 400 relay in 43.8 and the 1,600 relay in 3:25.3.
