Haselman Powers Red Sox to Victory

BALTIMORE —  Bill Haselman took some great swings before the game, then continued batting practice against the Baltimore Oriole pitching staff.

Haselman homered, hit three doubles and drove in four runs to lead the Boston Red Sox past the Orioles, 13-7, Sunday.

“I think it all started in batting practice. I had one of my best of the year,” he said. “A lot of times it doesn’t work out in a game for you. Today it did--I tried carrying it over. Fortunately, I was able to.”

Two of the most memorable games of Haselman’s career have occurred at Camden Yards. In 1993, he was involved in a brawl after being hit by a pitch from Mike Mussina.

“I’d like to put that behind me. I’ve been hearing about it for four years and it’s getting old. It’s stupid. He hit me, I charged--big deal,” Haselman said. “It was four years ago, but you guys keep talking about it. I haven’t thought about that for three years.”

The teams combined for eight home runs, including five by Boston. Mo Vaughn, Tim Naehring, Troy O’Leary and Wil Cordero also homered for the Red Sox, who salvaged a split of the four-game series.

Eric Davis homered twice and Cal Ripken had a three-run homer for the Orioles. But Baltimore’s bullpen gave up eight runs over the last three innings to blow a save opportunity for the first time in 12 tries this season.
