Vote for Lawmakers Marred by Violence

Citizens crowded into polling booths for parliamentary elections seen as a crucial test of the Arabian Peninsula’s only full-fledged democracy. But at least 11 people were killed in scattered violence, some of it reportedly linked to the vote. The elections marked Yemen’s first vote since a two-month civil war in 1994 almost tore apart the country. Before the voting started, one guard opened fire on his colleagues at a polling station in the south, killing eight people and wounding one, the Interior Ministry said, but the motive for the shooting did not appear to be related to the elections.
