Montiel’s Single Wins It for Pierce in the 10th

Tony Montiel singled home Jim Landress with one out in the 10th inning and Pierce College defeated Mission, 11-10, in a Western State Conference baseball game Thursday at Pierce.

Landress had three hits and scored three runs, and Seth Barkley added three hits.

Pierce (15-24, 7-15 in WSC play) led, 8-3, before Mission (19-21, 10-12) erupted for six runs in the sixth inning.

Santa Barbara 7, Ventura 2--The Pirates committed six errors that led to five unearned runs in a WSC game at Santa Barbara (14-22, 6-16).

Jason Watkins gave Ventura (21-15, 10-12) a 2-0 lead in the fifth inning with a two-run home run.

Dustin Tubb (8-4) gave up seven hits, struck out five and walked two in seven innings for Ventura.

Canyons 9, Valley 4--Ray Montenegro had two hits and drove in a run for Valley, and Dylan Forman added two hits, but the Monarchs (7-30-3, 6-16) fell in a WSC game at Valley.

Hancock 8, Moorpark 5--Andy Huisenga had three hits, including a home run, and two runs batted in, and Cory Fish added two hits for the Raiders (7-15 in conference), but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Bulldogs in a WSC game at Hancock.

Cuesta 10, Oxnard 6--Jason McAuliffe had two run-scoring doubles and Matt Buttel added two hits and scored twice for the Condors (18-18, 11-11) in a WSC game at Cuesta (33-7, 19-3).

SOFTBALL

Chapman 6-5, Cal Lutheran 3-6--The Regals (19-8-1), ranked 20th in Division III, got four hits from freshman Erin Bates in the second game of a nonconference doubleheader at Chapman.

Chapman (32-7), ranked seventh, had not lost a game to a Division III team this season.

Moorpark 2, Ventura 1--Lorie Ortiz had two hits and drove in Alicia Ramos with the winning run in the eighth inning in a WSC game at Ventura.

Ramos walked to open the eighth, stole second and third, and scored on Ortiz’s single to center field.

Moorpark (21-18, 11-5) scored in the fourth inning when Ramos singled, moved to second on a bunt and came home on a single by Ortiz.

Pierce 6, Canyons 5--The Brahmas (21-22, 7-9) scored two runs in the seventh inning of a WSC game at Canyons (8-25, 4-12).

Mirage Galaviz singled home Jenaye Brown with the winning run after Kelly Labor scored the tying run for the Brahmas on a throwing error following an infield single by Brown.

Labor finished with three hits.

Crystal Gonzalez had two hits for Canyons.
