Mayor Recovering From Hip Surgery
Mayor Frank Fry Jr. is in stable condition after a five-hour operation Wednesday to repair hip damage sustained in a car accident earlier this week, city officials said.
Fry broke his right hip and suffered other injuries Sunday when he lost control of his car and crashed into a tree in Garden Grove.
Fry is in stable condition at UCI Medical Center in Orange and is expected to remain in the trauma center for about two weeks, city officials said Thursday.
City spokeswoman Sondra Evans said the mayor is in good spirits and is ready to return to work.
Fry, 71, was driving on Trask Avenue near Jackson Street on Sunday afternoon when he veered off the road and knocked over a sign and tree before hitting a second tree, Garden Grove police said.
No one else was hurt.
Police said witnesses heard a popping sound, similar to a tire blowout, but the official cause of the accident has not been released.
