Police Issue Warning About Phone Scam
Ventura police say a man claiming to be either the police chief or a department representative is telephoning local businesses and residents requesting donations on behalf of a recently deceased officer.
Ventura police are not participating in any sort of telephone solicitation and ask that people receiving such calls report the scam to police at 339-4465.
Police say no one has actually donated any money.
The scam appears similar to one that surfaced last month in Los Angeles.
In that case, a caller claimed to be raising money for widows and orphans of slain police officers.
