Infestation Threatens California Avocados
I think the California public has a right to know that Mexico does have lots of pests and that is why the ban of Mexican avocados into the U.S. has been in effect for 83 years (“The Green Light,” Feb. 23).
Three years ago we got a new bug called the persea mite. This tiny insect is from south of the border and has taken over our avocado orchards. We have put out lots of money for “good bugs” to eat this bad one, but in the meantime, we have lost much fruit.
Also, Mexican farmers spray about 12 different kinds of pesticides on their fruit. We are not allowed to use most of these sprays in California. So please, don’t tell me about the poor Mexican avocado farmer.
