Weather Hinders Search for Pilot
Snow and rain complicated the search for an Air Force student pilot who disappeared in the mountains as he flew a bomb-carrying jet on a training mission. Capt. Craig David Button vanished Wednesday as he flew west from Tucson aboard the last in a three-plane formation bound for the Barry M. Goldwater bombing range. Military airplanes and helicopters centered their search for the A-10 Thunderbolt over a 100-square-mile area around the Superstition Mountains and Roosevelt Lake, a mountainous area east of Phoenix. Button, 33, could have switched on the jet’s autopilot system or parachuted out of the aircraft.
