Debate to Continue on Farmers Market

Debate on where to locate a farmers market will continue at tonight’s City Council meeting.
The Main Street Merchants Assn. has proposed setting up the market in a city-owned parking lot on Olinda Street.
The city staff, though, is recommending the parking lot of a bowling alley on Imperial Highway. That site is preferable, said Patricia Haley, community development director, because it is larger, has more parking and is more visible.
Also, the director of the public library, which is across the street from the city lot on Olinda Street, has expressed concern that the market would disturb library patrons.
The Main Street Merchants Assn. has been working with Councilwoman Barbara Kiley to bring a farmers market to town. The site must be large enough to accommodate the 18 to 20 produce vendors who have agreed to participate.
