Mugged in Montevideo
Regarding “Uruguay Uncovered” (March 16): Having been recently mugged in Montevideo by three young men, I found your glowing article about beautiful crime-free Montevideo a bit difficult to take.
Since the mugging took place just two blocks west of the Plaza Zabala in the Old City, I would recommend that American tourists leave documents and other valuables in hotel or cruise ship safes while walking the streets of Montevideo.

Editor’s Note: The article quotes several guidebooks as saying that Uruguay has “one of the lowest crime rates in South America.”
