Prominent Leftist Killed in Guerrero

A prominent leftist was shot to death in the southern state of Guerrero in the latest in a string of deaths within the opposition Democratic Revolution Party, or PRD, police said. Santana Alonso Arellano was killed Friday in a village near the border with Michoacan state, a police spokesman said. The Mexico City daily Reforma said Alonso, whose brother is a former Guerrero lawmaker for the PRD, was shot twice in the face while his hands and legs were bound. His death followed that of at least four other members of the PRD in Guerrero in the previous week. Party leaders have sought a meeting with President Ernesto Zedillo to demand a halt to the violence; the PRD blames supporters of Zedillo’s ruling Institutional Revolutionary Party for much of it.
