A MAN IN UNIFORM
Oasis’ Liam Gallagher gave a moment of tabloid celebrity to a middle-aged policeman when the rocker planted a kiss on the startled officer’s face in front of a cadre of photographers and fans during a recent photo session for the cover of the band’s next record.
“Liam had kissed one of our policewomen,” explained Sgt. Bernard Donning, who was part of the crowd-control force. “As he walked over, I said, ‘You can bugger off if you think you’re going to do that to me.’ He walked up to me, then grabbed my face with both hands and gave me a huge kiss on the cheek. It was a real smacker.
“He ran off shouting, ‘I got the copper!’ He was laughing his head off.”
Donning admitted that he had been concerned as Gallagher approached because of past run-ins involving Oasis and police. But he took the kiss in the spirit in which it was offered.
“He just did it as a joke, and I’m not angry with him,” he said. “But I realized that I am the envy of millions of girls.”
