* Melville K. Smith; Retired Business Owner

Melville K. Smith of Camarillo, a retired stationery store owner, died Wednesday at his home after a brief illness. He was 88.

Smith was born March 8, 1909, in Los Angeles and lived in Camarillo for six years.

He served in the Marine Corps from 1930 to 1934.

Smith lived in Van Nuys for 45 years and was a co-owner and manager of Bush’s Stationery store in Van Nuys before moving to Camarillo.

He was First Grand Knight of the West Valley Council of the Knights of Columbus. Smith also belonged to the Rotary Club, Kiwanis Club and Chamber of Commerce, all of Reseda.

Smith is survived by three daughters, Rosanna Hile of Irvine, Mary Mel Hallie of Camarillo and Margaret Maund of La Jolla; a son, Frederick Smith of Valley Center; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be Monday at noon at St. Elisabeth Catholic Church in Van Nuys. A rosary will be said at 1 p.m., and a mass of resurrection will be said at 2 p.m. Interment will follow at San Fernando Mission Cemetery in Mission Hills.

Donations may be made to the Knights of Columbus or a charity of choice.

Arrangements are under the direction of Pierce Brothers Griffin Mortuary in Camarillo.
