William H. Levit; Former Judge, Pensions Expert

William H. Levit, 89, a former judge who was an expert on California’s judicial retirement system. A native of San Francisco, Levit earned his bachelor’s and law degrees from Stanford and served as a lieutenant colonel in the Army legal corps. He sat on the Los Angeles County Superior Court from 1962 to 1976 and served on the Judicial Council of California from 1969 to 1971. Levit also served on the governing board of the California Center for Judicial Education and Research from 1973 to 1976. Before his judicial service, Levit practiced law in his own firm of Long & Levit, and after his retirement from the bench joined the Century City office of the firm Stroock & Stroock & Lavan. He represented his former judicial colleagues in a number of civil suits over retirement pensions for judges, a system he had helped to create. On Friday in Los Angeles.
