Waisberg’s Double Ends on High Note

Richie Waisberg was the starting pitcher in each of Montclair Prep’s two pool-play games Saturday in the Birmingham baseball tournament, and he came away with two decisions--one victory, one loss.
Fortunately for the Mounties (2-5), he finished strong.
Waisberg pitched four shutout innings, hit two home runs and a double, and drove in four runs in an 18-9 victory over Vasquez at the Mission Hills Little League complex.
In the first game, Waisberg gave up five runs in three-plus innings in a 13-5 loss to Simi Valley.
In other Birmingham tournament games:
Camarillo 16, Hollywood 0--Mike Bannon had four hits, including a bases-loaded triple, and four runs batted in and brother Jeff Bannon had three hits and two RBIs for the Scorpions (7-1) at Camarillo.
Simi Valley 7, Birmingham 0--Mike Causley pitched an eight-hitter and Brandon Voorhies hit a two-run homer for the Pioneers (4-4) at Birmingham.
Notre Dame 3, Westchester 1--In his first varsity outing, Ryan Cowsill gave up three hits and struck out six in 5 1/3 innings for the Knights (7-2) at Notre Dame.
San Fernando 5, Franklin 2--Ronald Herrera (1-0) pitched a five-hitter for the Tigers (6-3) at San Fernando.
San Fernando 11, Venice 3--George Rocha had three doubles and two RBIs for the host Tigers.
Poly 3, Littlerock 1--Jeron Brignac had a run-scoring triple and Manny Flores had two hits and an RBI for the Parrots (4-5) at Poly. Starter Gus Banuelos (2-3) pitched three perfect innings.
Poly 4, Westchester 2--Jeron Brignac (1-0) allowed three hits in four innings at Poly.
Calabasas 3, University 1--Matt Jackson (3-0) allowed two hits in six innings for the Coyotes (7-2) at Calabasas. Brian Fatur of Calabasas extended his hitting streak to 21 games over two seasons.
Calabasas 12, Van Nuys 6--Brian Fatur had two hits, two stolen bases and two RBIs for the host Coyotes.
Monroe 11, Venice 2--John Ennis (3-1) allowed two hits in six innings, striking out eight, and had three hits and scored three runs for the Vikings (5-4) at Monroe.
Monroe 4, Franklin 2--Victor Banuelos (1-1) allowed two hits in 4 1/3 innings for the host Vikings.
Channel Islands 9, Van Nuys 3--Ruben Vasquez (2-2) pitched a six-hitter for the Raiders (5-4) at Channel Islands. Jared Krehbiel and Craig Knight each had two hits and two RBIs.
Channel Islands 4, University 2--Ruben Vasquez had three hits, including a double, and drove in a run for the host Raiders. Junior Quintanilla (1-1) allowed three hits and struck out five in five innings.
In other games:
El Dorado 5-5, Hart 3-4--Eric Ballew hit a three-run home run for the Indians in the first game, but Hart (5-4) was swept in a doubleheader at El Dorado.
Whitney 9, St. Genevieve 5--Twins Josh and Sam Okumura each had two hits and two RBIs for St. Genevieve (3-4) in the L.A. Baptist tournament.
L.A. Baptist 7, Campbell Hall 2--Tim Feirfeil hit a two-run homer for the Knights (6-2) in the L.A. Baptist tournament.
Valencia 14, Western Christian 2--Brady Burrill homered and doubled for the Vikings (5-2) in the Faith Baptist tournament at Valencia.
